Gift to fund new hands-on teaching facility
McKesson Canada has donated $100,000 to fund one of five new practical laboratory-seminar rooms for the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. The McKesson Canada-sponsored seminar room will be housed in the university’s new $75 million Leslie L. Dan Pharmacy Building, scheduled for official opening in autumn this year.
The five professional practice laboratory seminar rooms will offer students real-world experience in a unique teaching environment. In labs built to resemble actual pharmacies, students will practice counseling “patients”, played by actors, in areas such as drug interaction, medication and disease management. The learning opportunities will be further enhanced through a closed-circuit television system that allows scenarios to be recorded and viewed by classmates and professors.
The new Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy building will provide the necessary infrastructure for substantial increases in research activities, as well as a doubling of pharmacy program enrolments, plus room for faculty staff increases.
“We are delighted with McKesson Canada’s contribution to our faculty,” says Professor Wayne Hindmarsh, Dean of the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy. “Both the public and private sectors play important roles in the education of our future pharmacists and pharmacy professionals. With this generous gift, McKesson Canada demonstrates its commitment to pharmacy education, and sets a great example for others in the private sector.”
“McKesson Canada offers solutions that enable health care professionals to follow their passions – caring for patients,” says Joe Varkul, Vice President for the Ontario Marketplace, McKesson Canada. “Our company is proud to sponsor the McKesson Canada Seminar Room where tomorrow’s pharmacists will be able to develop their patient-counseling skills.”
