Ravi Deshpande Rappels Down the Toronto City Hall at the Make-A-Wish® Rope for Hope Challenge

While many of us get the jitters going up a ladder, Ravi Deshpande craves heights. The mountain climber, who is Senior Vice-President, Specialty Health at McKesson Canada, recently put his passion to good use at the June 9 Make-A-Wish® Rope for Hope Toronto challenge. The national challenge calls on participants to raise money in exchange for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rappel down a city skyscraper. All money raised by rappellers goes towards granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

“Years ago, I worked as an oncology pharmacist at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children and saw firsthand what a difference the Make-A-Wish® Foundation can make in the lives of children and their families”, says Ravi. “I was very excited — and a bit nervous — at the prospect of rappelling down the sheer 100-metre drop of Toronto City Hall. Doing it with my fellow mountain climbers to fundraise in support of wish-granting really gave me wings. When children have their wish come true, they feel stronger, more energetic, and more willing and able to battle their medical condition. For many of them, it marks a turning point in their fight against their illness.” The event reflects our ICARE Shared Principles and our employees’ ongoing commitment to create better health for our communities.

Because of the length of the descent — rappels beyond 60-70 metres are rare in the mountains — Ravi’s rope was very heavy and needed continuous tending, making his progress slow. But in true mountaineering form, one step at a time, Ravi landed safely after an exhilarating descent. At the end of the day, the team of “Toronto Climbers” achieved – and even surpassed – their fundraising goal, donating $63,666 to the Make-A-Wish® Foundation. Congratulations to all!
